Description

Speaker: Steve Gourlay

Abstract

Accelerator-based particle physics has relied on superconductivity for over half a century. The path has not necessarily been an easy one. This talk will give an overview of the development of superconducting accelerator magnets starting with the Tevatron up to the LHC and a look beyond. There have been many challenges over the past half century, mostly technical but also sociological. Some have been resolved and others are still with us today.
