History and Scope

ATAS-ANXAS-2027 Workshop at LBNL will be the third joint workshop since merging the formerly independent Advanced Techniques in Actinide Science (ATAS) and Actinide X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (ANXAS) Workshop series in 2022. This will be the first time LBNL will host the unified workshop after hosting the third ANXAS Workshop in 2004.

Both of the respective workshops date back to initiatives by Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). ActinideXAS was launched and first held in 1998 at the ESRF in Grenoble (France) to focus on work at synchrotron radiation facilities capable of handling radioactive materials at beamlines. Subsequent ActinideXAS workshops have taken place at the ESRF, LBNL (United States), FZK (Germany), SOLEIL (France), SPring-8 (Japan), PSI (Switzerland), Oxford University (United Kingdom), and KIT (Germany). The series of ATAS Workshops started in 2012 with the first held at HZDR in Dresden (Germany) in the context of a comprehensive round robin test comparing actinide speciation methods at laboratories around the world. The initial workshop was followed by events at HZDR, PNNL (United States), and Nice (France). The ATAS Workshops include an expanded scope including all advanced speciation methods, not solely synchrotron radiation-based ones, with an added focus on quantum chemistry.

The first joint ATAS-ANXAS Workshop was held in 2022, returning to the ESRF in Grenoble to bring the actinide science, radionuclide speciation, spectroscopy, and theory communities together for a successful single, unified workshop. This was followed by the second joint ATAS-ANXAS Workshop held at KIT in 2024 that was another resounding success. The respective Scientific Advisory Boards have endorsed the ATAS-ANXAS Workshops as an on-going biennial five-day joint workshop.

The ATAS-ANXAS-2027 Workshop at LBNL features a stellar cast of confirmed Plenary, Keynote, and Invited speakers that are listed on the website. The Workshop spans a wide and diverse range of topics that also includes facility reports. This edition of the Workshop series includes a special kick-off with an early career half-day session, the ever-popular poster session with refreshments, LBNL facility tours, and a Workshop banquet. We welcome and look forward to seeing you in Berkeley in early 2027 for the ATAS-ANXAS-2027 Workshop!
