Air Travel

Berkeley is in the San Francisco Bay Area. Two major airports serve this part of the Bay Area: OAK (Oakland) and SFO (San Francisco).  Both are conveniently connected to Berkeley by public transit.

The Bay Area's third airport with scheduled commercial flights, Mineta San Jose Airport (SJC), is at the far south end of the Bay, and public transit between there and Berkeley takes two hours or more and multiple transfers.  Most Berkeley Lab visitors would not choose SJC  unless they also had business in Silicon Valley or Stanford/SLAC (and a rental car).

Ground Transportation:  Taking BART to Berkeley

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train system is a convenient, inexpensive way to get to the LBNL shuttle-bus stop in downtown Berkeley from  SFO and OAK. Consider whether it, or an airport shuttle, might serve your needs as an alternative to a rental car.

The BART website has an online trip planner that creates your itinerary, as well as rider guides for SFO and for OAK.

BART serves SFO directly. The OAK trip involves an eight-minute, $6 ride on an elevated railway dedicated to connecting the airport and the nearest BART station, Coliseum.

BART ticket machines in the stations accept cash and give change, and accept credit cards.

Your destination on BART would usually be the Downtown Berkeley station on the Richmond line. The Rockridge station on the Pittsburg/Bay Point line would also work, though shuttle-bus service to the Lab (see below) is limited.

Getting from BART to the Lab

During business hours on weekdays, Berkeley Lab offers a free shuttle bus to the BART stations.  The Blue Route, our principal offsite shuttle, offers frequent service to the Downtown Berkeley station.  It starts early in the morning and runs well into the evening.

The Orange Route goes down Bancroft Avenue on the south side of the UC Berkeley campus, which we mention in case you are staying at the Graduate (formerly Durant) or the  Bancroft Hotel.

There is also limited express service to Rockridge station.

Both the Downtown Berkeley and the Rockridge BART stations have areas nearby where you can usually find a taxicab,  and are well known to ride-hailing drivers as well.
